Exhibit · As Designed
Five founders. Five stated values. One record. What follows is not a list of villains. It is a look at what happens when an institution is tuned for attention, growth, and extraction, and held to those incentives for long enough.
The point is the design, not the people.
Where it starts
It is the friendliest question on the internet. It is also a machine. Every answer is content, every account is a profile, every reader is a metric. The question never changes. What it does to us does.
A platform's values are not what its founder says. They are what its incentives reward.
Mark Zuckerberg · Meta
Said
Asked in Congress whether the platform harms children, he said he did not believe the research was conclusive.
Shown
Months earlier, leaked internal research showed Meta knew Instagram made body-image issues worse for one in three teen girls.
The Wall Street Journal, "The Facebook Files," 2021; U.S. House testimony, March 2021.
Elon Musk · X
Said
The feed is a level playing field, where the best posts rise on merit.
Shown
After his 2023 Super Bowl post drew fewer views than the President's, he had engineers boost his own posts by a reported factor of 1,000, past the filters that limit any one account. He had bought the platform for $44 billion months earlier.
Platformer; Bloomberg, February 2023.
Sam Altman · OpenAI
Said
Founded OpenAI in 2015 as a nonprofit, built to put the mission ahead of profit.
Shown
A capped-profit arm in 2019, then a pursuit of conversion toward a conventional for-profit, with the cap on investor returns reported to be loosening. The company has been valued in the hundreds of billions.
OpenAI announcements and filings; The New York Times; TIME, 2019 to 2025.
Jeff Bezos · Amazon
Said
Obsess over the customer. Work backward from what people need.
Shown
In 2022, Amazon employed about a third of U.S. warehouse workers but accounted for roughly half of all serious injuries in the industry. His net worth is estimated in the range of a quarter-trillion dollars.
Strategic Organizing Center, 2023; U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Dario Amodei · Anthropic
Said
A counterweight to reckless scaling, built to do the careful version.
Shown
Tens of billions raised, a valuation in the hundreds of billions. On accepting money from authoritarian sovereign wealth funds, he wrote in 2025 that "No bad person should ever benefit from our success" is "a pretty difficult principle to run a business on."

The pattern
Each of these is a system performing the function it was built for. The values on the wall and the values in the code are different documents. When the incentive is attention, growth, and extraction, the outcomes are not failures. They are the design working.
So the useful question is not who to blame. It is what you would have to change underneath, in the incentives themselves, to get a different result.
Change the question the platform asks, and you change everything it produces.
A different design
We’re trying something else.
One prompt.
One submission.
Every day.
The winner keeps half.
The winner gives half away.
Maybe it works.
Maybe it doesn’t.
